#402 - Complex Motives

In the Japanese version of the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo is an artificial life being who finds himself superior to most human beings after realizing he's an experiment until proven wrong by Mew. The American version, however, changed all of this. It just differentiates between the good guys and the bad guys, and Mewtwo simply wants to wipe out humankind without any context given. They did this so kids would understand the film, even though removing this content affected reviews very negatively. To make up for this, a 10-minute short explaining Mewtwo's motives (which was already in the Japanese version) was later added to the beginning of the film. However, it concludes that Mewtwo simply enrages, while the Japanese version fully explains said existential crisis.
