The first public news about the Switch happened on March 17, 2015, during a press conference announcing Nintendo's partnership with DeNA, under the name NX. On October 20, 2016, the NX was revealed as the Nintendo Switch.
The reason why the Switch was first shown so late is because they didn't want any of their competitors to copy ideas from the Switch if they revealed it too soon, according to Shigeru Miyamoto during an interview at E3 2016, where Breath of the Wild was confirmed for the NX.
